The temperatures have certainly dropped, and we are quickly approaching what looks to be like a white, and frigid winter. When temperatures begin to fall close to, or below, zero continuously, it makes your aluminum gutter guards impossible to clean. Because of this, it is extremely important to have your guard project and/or your gutters cleaned prior to freezing temperatures!
Here are some reasons why completing a guard only installation and gutter cleanings need to be done before continual freezing temperatures occur:
When debris within a gutter freezes, we cannot remove it because chipping at frozen debris will damage your gutter system. Because of this, we need to wait until it thaws to remove the debris. When the temperature begins to reach the point of consistently remaining below freezing, the debris won’t have a chance to defrost. This means that we cannot clean them until the temperatures increase, which usually means Spring.
Installing Gutter Guards Only:
Aluminum gutter guards cannot be installed in below freezing temperatures. Even if they are on existing gutter systems. This is because the gutters need to be cleaned prior to guard installation. This ensures a clog-free gutter and the most effective solution. Because we cannot clean the existing gutters out first (frozen debris), we cannot install a guard properly. However, we can install them on a completely new gutter system. If you are looking to have both guards and new gutters installed, there is a longer window of opportunity into the late fall months to do so.
Installing flat back gutter guards cannot take place in extremely low temperatures. When installing a flat back guard, lifting the shingles so the guard can slide underneath. Lifting a brittle, frozen shingle can cause shingle damage to your roof.
This is an important reminder as we head quickly into November. As that is the cutoff date for gutter cleanings and guard only installations. Cleaning your gutters is very important and making sure they are working properly before winter hits. To help with planning your project, it’s important to keep in mind that there are certain winter conditions we cannot work in at all.
Winter is hard enough on properly working gutters, don’t take any chances with clogged ones! Did you know that installing aluminum gutter guards can actually strengthen your gutters? And it will help them survive the added weight of winter snow and ice! If you struggle with ice damming, we also have a heated gutter option!
