Materials: Copper Gutters

In our latest blog in our Materials series we’ll be highlighting copper gutters. Copper gutters can do more than add function, they can also add curb appeal. In this blog we’ll be discussing the following:

Lifespan / Durability

One of the most appealing parts of copper gutters is the longevity. Properly maintained they can last from 50-150 years! That’s longer than any other gutter material on the market. Most other materials last between 10-30 years. Even though galvanized and galvalume are considered the strongest gutter materials on the market, copper is considered to be more than strong enough to handle extreme weather conditions. In coastal areas where rust forms very quickly, copper will maintain it’s structural integrity and continue to work. Unlike other materials that rust, copper forms a patina that protects it. Copper gutters patina in various colors. The patina’s typically something between a reddish-brown and a sea foam-green. Many homeowners, not only like this look, but even desire ways to artificially patina gutters with certain oxidizing compounds. They can get your gutters to look fifty years old in as little as twenty-four hours!

Aside from copper’s functionality, it can also be one of the most visually appealing gutter materials. Copper gutters’ rustic look pairs perfectly with the decor of historic and high-end homes. Historic homes get an extra touch of class when the they patina as well. Copper isn’t the right choice for every home, but when it is, it looks awesome! And it’s nice to know that besides your gutters looking great and adding curb appeal to your home, that they’re going to last a long, long time.

Because of copper’s longevity, appeal, and work that goes into installation, it is one of the more costly materials averaging between $18-$40 per foot of gutter. The installation process isn’t the same as other materials. Instead of steel screws, we install with brass screws. The joints, end caps, and elbows are soldered instead of sealing them. The added cost is no comparison to the reliability of copper gutter systems.
