The temperatures have certainly dropped, and we are quickly approaching what looks to be like a white, and frigid winter. When temperatures begin to fall close to, or below, zero continuously, it makes gutter cleanings and guard only installations impossible. Because of this, it is extremely important to have your guard project and/or your gutters cleaned prior to freezing temperatures!
Here are some reasons why guard only installations and gutter cleanings need to be completed prior to continual freezing temperatures:
- Gutter Cleanings: When debris within a gutter freezes, we cannot remove it because chipping at frozen debris will damage your gutter system. Because of this, we cannot remove the debris until it is defrosted. When the temperature begins to reach the point of consistently remaining below freezing night after night, the debris will unfortunately not have a chance to defrost, which means that we cannot clean them until the temperatures increase, which usually means Spring.
- Guard only installations: Guards cannot be installed in below freezing temperatures on existing gutter systems because the gutters need to be cleaned prior to guard installation to ensure a clog-free gutter and the most effective solution. Because we cannot clean the existing gutters out first (frozen debris), we cannot install a guard properly. However, we can install them on a completely new gutter system. If you are looking to have both guards and new gutters installed, there is a longer window of opportunity into the late fall months to do so.
- Flat Back Gutter Guards: Flat back gutter guards cannot be installed in extremely low temperatures, because they are installed under the shingles. When the shingles are frozen, they become brittle. When installing a flat back guard, the shingles need to be lifted so the guard can slide underneath. Lifting a brittle, frozen shingle can cause shingle damage to your roof.
This is an important reminder as we head quickly into November that the cutoff date for gutter cleanings and guard only installations is just around the corner! It is very important to make sure your gutters are cleaned and working properly before winter hits. To help with planning your project accordingly, it is also important to keep in mind that there are certain winter conditions we cannot work in at all.
Winter is hard enough on properly working gutters, don’t take any chances with clogged ones! Did you know that installing gutter guards can actually strengthen your gutters and help them survive the added weight of winter snow and ice? If you struggle with ice damming, we also have a heated gutter option!
